Our fridge and garden can be wonderful places to look for ingredients for our skincare products. Herbs, flowers, fruit and vegetables can all be used to add a new dimension to our products that we make in our kitchen. This cucumber glycerite recipe will help you to make various skincare recipes i.e. face masks, shampoo soap and moisturisers.
If you plan to sell your skincare range I would recommend you buy your ingredients from a reputable company that will provide you with all the necessary paperwork required by law. You can obviously make your own but it could prove costly and time consumming to obtain the legal certification required to use the ingredients in your products.
The smell of cucumbers reminds us of long, hot summers, bbq's, eating in the garden, salads and the fresh smell of summer months. No wonder it's a dream product to use, it heightens our feel good factor as well as being great for our skin, eyes, hair and well being - like humans it's made of a high water content.
Love this salad ingredient. Cucumbers are rich in vitamin C, B and K, folic acid, copper phosphorus, potassium and magnesium. It's well known to reduce puffiness and dark circles around the eyes, helps alleviate tired, gritty eyes, promote hair growth, stimulate new cell growth, help to fight off toxins found in the environment, increase skin hydration and provides a cooling effect on the skin and eyes.
Glycerine has always been used in skincare products as it acts as a humectant, which means it attracts moisture from the air and locks it into our skin keeping it hydrated, relieves dryness and refreshes the skin surface. It's also an emollient which means it will help to soften the skin.
Put these two ingredients together and what a special product you can make - a cucumber glycerite.
How to make a Cucumber Glycerite
Sterilise a jar or bottle.
Wash your cucumber - make sure you use pesticide free.
Peel skin or cut cucumber into chunks.
Weigh out the amount of glycerine you want to use.
You want to use 70% glycerine and 30% chopped and peeled cucumber.
Label your jar or bottle with the ingredients and the date made.
Shake well.
Leave for about 2 weeks, shaking occasionally throughout that time.
Using a clean sieve and muslin cloth or cheesecloth strain the contents of the bottle or jar.
Keep the cucumber glycerite in the closed container, in a dark and cool place when not in use.
This will keep for 12-24mths.
Use the cucumber glycerite in eye creams and serums, moisturisers, body lotion, hand creams, foot creams, face masks and shampoos.
A cool, gorgeous smelling skincare ingredient thats easy to make.
Enjoy x Diane
