Aloe Vera, a great houseplant with so many uses around the home, from minor burns to skin irritations, simply break off a leaf, scrape out the gel like substance inside and apply directly onto the problem area.
Sadly, if you want to incorporate Aloe Vera into your DIY skincare products you can not use it straight from the plant unless you use your product up immediately as it will go bad very, very quickly. You can, however, buy Aloe Vera concentrate which has been freeze dried from the plant and then diluted with an added preservative. This can then be used in making creams, lotions and gels. Gels are very easy to make at home using food-based gelling agents like xanthum gum.
I think the recipe below is the Best After Sun Gel with Aloe Vera you can make.
Basic Gel
86% x Bottled Spring Water
10% x Aloe Vera Concentrate
2% x Glycerin
1% x Xanthum Gum
1% x Broad Spectrum Preservative
Stage 1
Mix together the Glycerin and Xanthum Gum to make a paste.
Heat the water but do not boil.
Gradually add the water and blend well using a stick blender.
Leave to cool to room temperature.
Stage 2 - Room temperature
Add the Preservative to the Aloe Vera.
Blend well into Stage 1 ingredients
Once you have made your basic gel you can then move on to making the Best After Sun Gel with Aloe Vera containing skin loving oils and essential oils to sooth and protect your skin.
Stage 3
95% x Basic Gel
2% x Calendula infused oil
2% x Chickweed infused oil
1% x Essential Oils i.e. Lavender
Mix the Calendula infused oil, Chickweed infused oil and essential oil together then blend well into the basic gel.
Carefully pour into a clean bottle.
You have now made the Best After Sun Gel with Aloe Vera, however, this can be used at anytime, especially if your skin is itchy, hot or just to give your body a boost.
Keeping the bottle in the fridge during the summer will also keep it lovely and cool to apply to the skin.
